Mary’s Chocolate Cake

Directions

1Cream shortening, sugar and salt. Add eggs, one at a time. Add flour and buttermilk, alternately, beginning with the flour. Add melted chocolate then hot water containing the soda and vanilla.

2Pour batter into two 8 or 9 inch cake pans that have been greased and floured. Bake at 375 degrees for about 25 minutes or until toothpick tests clean.

Frost with Mary's Chocolate Frosting

Ingredients

1/2 cup shortening

1 2/3 cup sugar

1 cup buttermilk

2 squares baking chocolate, melted

3 eggs

2 cups flour

1/2 cup hot water

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon vanilla

pinch salt
